GRAYSON, Ky. - Jordin McQueen's last-second shot would bounce off back-iron Monday night as CIU women's basketball fell to Kentucky Christian 71-69 in an intense Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) battle. CIU (9-11, 7-8 AAC) entered the contest coming off two consecutive victories last week over Brenau (Ga.) and St. Andrews (N.C.). KCU (13-8, 9-6 AAC) swept the season series with CIU with the tightly contested win.
The Rams led after both the first and second quarters as CIU put up one of the highest-scoring halves of the year as they held a 41-37 advantage at halftime.
Both teams traded the lead throughout the third quarter, but CIU found themselves down by one after three. Then down by four (69-65) with 3:08 remaining in the fourth, the Rams fought back to tie the game on a Queeneka Howard layup with 28 seconds left in regulation. KCU's Anna Keeton floater found the bottom of the net on the next possession, and CIU was faced with an out-of-bounds play with just five seconds on the clock. Zion Neat would get free and then get the ball to McQueen, who had an excellent look but couldn't quite get the shot to fall as the horn sounded.
Teneea Heston was two rebounds away from a double-double with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Keniah Watkins continues a hot shooting streak as the senior went 3-of-4 from deep for 11 points.
Zion Neat rounded out the scoring for CIU as the third player in double figures with 11.
What Coach Danielle Fleming is saying:
"Tough loss. Got outrebounded tonight. These games are never fun when you're on the losing end, but once again, we'll learn from it and be ready for Thursday."
