COLUMBIA, S.C. - CIU women's basketball played their final game of a three-game home slate taking on Point University (Ga.) Thursday night. The Rams entered the game off a tough loss to Kentucky Christian University this past Thursday as they fell 93-88 at the Moore Fitness Center. CIU held a 6-9 record entering the contest and 4-6 in the Appalachin Athletic Conference (AAC). Coach Fleming's squad welcomed a talented Skyhawks team who sat among the top three teams in the conference at 12-2 overall, with their only two losses coming to Milligan (Tenn.) and No. 15 Bryan (Tenn.). However, CIU got the best of Point at home, toppling the Skyhawks 71-59, marking the first-ever win against the Skyhawks in program history. The Rams improve to 7-9 on the season and 5-6 in AAC play.
The Rams got off to a great first quarter holding the Skyhawks to 5-of-19 shooting (26.3%) while shooting an efficient 7-of-14 from the field themselves.
Teneea Heston and
Madison Hatcher would lead the Rams with seven and five points in the first period, each knocking down a three-pointer to help their team take a 21-13 lead after the first ten minutes. However, Point would battle back in the second quarter due to six turnovers by CIU. At the break, the Rams would hold a two-point lead, 36-34.
The third quarter saw little scoring as both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net. CIU would shoot 21.7 percent from the field, only scoring 16 points. However, the Rams aggressive defense forced the Skyhawks to shoot a combined 1-of-14 (7.1%) from the floor, only allowing 11 points.
In the fourth quarter, Coach Fleming's squad would continue playing ferocious defense, holding the Skyhawks to just 14 points. As a result, CIU would take down the Point 71-59.
Teneea Heston, a steady contributor for the Rams this season, led the way in the scoring column. Heston notched her first double-double of the season, with 18 points and ten rebounds.
Madison Hatcher continues to have a breakout freshman campaign with another impressive night with 14 points and five rebounds.
Britney Brown filled the stat sheet with three points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
