Men's Track & Field has solid weekend at outdoor home meet
COLUMBIA, S.C. – CIU's men's track & field team participated in their spring home meet on Friday and Saturday, the CIU Rams College Invitational. Teams from across the southeast and as far as Indiana came to participate in the meet. The Rams succeeded in several areas and made the most of the on-campus event.
Sophomore
John Hunter James picked up where he left in the indoor season as he nabbed the top spot in the pole vault while qualifying for the NAIA Outdoor Championships with a height of 4.85m. Fellow pole vaulter
Blake Rimmer placed 4th in the pole vault with a height of 4.10m. Rimmer also threw the javelin 33.04m while also his brother Branson edged him out with a distance of 33.11 in the event. The Rimmers' rank 2nd and 3rd all-time in the javelin in program history.
On the track,
Ethan Robinson and
Clayton Hammond both were solid for the Rams in their respective events. Robinson finished with a time of 11.49 in the 100 meters and 22.90 in the 200 meters. Hammond had strong 400m, finishing at 53.30 while his teammate
Josh Ford had his PR in 400m hurdles.
Tavarres Berrian was top 20 out of 87 competitors in the 800m with a time of 2:00.68.
Brandon Bacon shined as he was close to qualifying for outdoor nationals in the racewalk with a time of 24:00.84.
Coach
Jud Brooker spoke on his athlete's performance at their home event saying, "The men had a great meet today. We had a lot going and several athletes worked the meet and competed, which makes their marks that much more impressive. Brandon stood out just barely missing the time for nationals while John Hunter causally qualified for nationals while also recording the top height in the nation."
