KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The CIU women's basketball team made their first trip to the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament on Wednesday as they challenged Union College in the conference quarterfinals. Coming off a win over Milligan on Saturday, the seventh-seeded Rams (13-15) liked their chances against the second seed Bulldogs (15-4). CIU had defeated Union back on February 6th but was unable to come up on top Wednesday as Union pulled ahead in the second half to end CIU's upset hopes 70-60.
How it happened:
First Half: UC 30 CIU 29: CIU fell behind 9-4 early but a score inside from Keniah Watkins and a three from Jordin McQueen put the Rams right back in it. Freshman Zion Neat scored at the end of the first quarter to give CIU a 15-13 lead after one. The Rams lost the advantage almost immediately to start the second quarter but a Madison Ferrara 3-pointer put the Rams back in front 24-23 with 3:54 remaining in the half. CIU once again trailed at the 30-second mark but McQueen ended the quarter with a pretty floater to cut the deficit to 30-29 heading into halftime.
Second Half: UC 70 CIU 60: The third quarter is where the trouble started for the Rams as CIU was outscored by the Bulldogs 24-7 in the period. Trailing 54-36 heading into the fourth CIU was able to muster a run cutting the lead to 60-52 on two Tiona Walls free throws with 5:50 left in the contest. Kiara Austin came in off the bench to knock down a three late as CIU outscored Union 24-16 in the fourth but still fell to the Bulldogs, 70-60.
Game Notes:
- Keniah Watkins scored 15 points in just 19 minutes, going 5-11 from the field and 5-8 from the line. Watkins added three assists and four rebounds.
- Freshman Madison Ferrara stepped up off the bench scoring 10 points and hitting two 3-pointers.
- Queeneka Howard was solid off the bench as she scored eight points and tallied four rebounds.

- The story of the game was inside as CIU was outrebounded 48-32 and outscored in the paint 56-34.

"It was a tough game. I wish it was a different outcome but we will build off this and be better for it. We have a great opportunity to go to the NCCAA so we are looking forward to that. We had a good run in the AAC this year."
