LAURINBURG, N.C. – CIU women's basketball took on St. Andrews University on Monday evening as the Knights looked to play spoiler versus the Rams. However, despite several momentum shifts late in the contest CIU (12-13) dispatched St. Andrews (2-16) 79-64. The win gives CIU its 10th conference win of the season, the first time the Rams have reached that milestone since joining the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC).
How It Happened:
First Half: CIU 34 SAU 34: CIU picked up their first lead of the game 17-15 at the 3:02 mark after Zion Neat scored inside, but the Rams trailed 19-18 at the end of the first quarter. CIU started the second period on a 9-0 run taking a 27-19 lead. The Knights then outscored the Rams 15-7 to end the first half, with the game deadlocked at 34-34 at the break. Notably, Keniah Watkins scored nine first-quarter points.
Second Half: CIU 79 SAU 64: Watkins lit up again in the third as she scored eight points and helped the Rams to their largest lead of the game 51-41 midway through the quarter. The Knights battled back, and the Rams clung to a 53-47 advantage entering the final period. St. Andrews gave CIU a scare going up 57-55 at the 7:28 mark. Thanks to several forced turnovers CIU outscored St.Andrews 24-7 in the final 7:00 minutes of the contest to take home the double-digit win.
Game Notes:
- Keniah Watkins scored 26 points knocking down 10 free throws. Interestingly Watkins scored 35 points at St. Andrews last season.
- Freshman Zion Neat stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, four rebounds, and four steals.
- Jordin McQueen was influential in multiple facets of the game with 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and four assists.
- Junior Hannah Trawick continues to find her stride as she was one point shy of double-double tallying 11 rebounds and nine points.
- CIU forced 28 turnovers while only committing 13 of their own.
What Coach Danielle Fleming is saying:
"Played more consistent each quarter. Keniah had an excellent game for us, controlling the tempo and finishing at the rim. We struggled from three but shot 81% from the foul line, which helps.
