DENMARK, S.C. - After having their opening game of the season postponed earlier this week, CIU women's basketball turned to fellow in-state NAIA program Voorhees College (S.C.) for a midweek matchup on Thursday. The Tigers proved to be a challenging opponent as the Rams could not overcome an early deficit. Despite several small runs throughout the game, CIU could not come all the way back, falling 82-66.
The Rams turned to two returners for the bulk of their scoring on Thursday evening as Zion Neat scored ten points while Queeneka Howard started her senior year strong, scoring 17 points knocking down five three-pointers, and pulling down seven rebounds. Freshman Madison Hatcher was equally impressive from beyond the arc as she hit three triples on her way to 16 points in her collegiate debut. Hatcher also contributed defensively, leading the Rams with four steals. Newcomer Teneea Heston was solid in her first game with CIU as she racked up eight points and five boards.
What Coach Danielle Fleming is saying:
"We lost on the boards and the defensive end, and we didn't play CIU basketball tonight. Game one didn't go as we had hoped, but we are looking ahead to Union."
