Track and Field Participates at Gamecock Invitational
The Columbia International University Track and Field team made the short trip downtown to take part in the Gamecock Invitational. This was the Rams third weekend in a row with a meet so only a couple athletes took part in events. However, the Rams continued to improve and took steps forward as they look to conference and nationals.
Track Events
Sam Wammock only took part in one event this weekend and made the most of it. Wammock competed in the shot put against NCAA Division I & Division II athletes. Wammock had her best throws of the year finishing in ninth place with a mark of 11.02 meters beating athletes from Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, and Newberry. With her throw Wammock also qualified for NCCAA Nationals.
Brandon Scaffe competed in the pole vault, but unfortunately no height at 3.85 meters. The top performer from South Carolina cleared a height of 5.25 meters.
Meghann Miller took part in the triple jump, but fouled on her three jumps. Liberty University had the top finisher with a mark of 12.42 meters.
Dizayuh Hinton and Vincent Suarez both took part in the discus throw against a highly competitive field. Suarez unfortunately fouled on his three throws, while Hinton finished sixteenth with a throw of 38.29 meters.
Field Events
Michael Knight was the first Ram to compete on the track in the men's 5k. Knight was looking to break his own record, but fell just short with a time of 17:48.
Janna Imes took part in the 5k on the women's side and had a solid race defeating girls from Presbyterian and North Greenville, Imes crossed teh finish line with a time of 20:13.
Blake Guillozet was just one of 58 competitors in the men's 1500 meter race. Guillozet was placed in heat three and finished fourth in his heat with a time of 4:14 just three seconds off the top time in his heat.
Gloria Book was in a field of over 50 competitors for the women's race as well and had a solid race with a time of 5:31.
Sotiria Tsilionis competed in the women's 800 meter run, Tsilionis was placed in heat five with a couple athletes from Southern Wesleyan. Tsilionis had a good race as she finished with a time of 2:34.
John Talbert was back on the track for the 400 meter hurdles looking to improve from his first race last weekend. Talbert had a steady improvement with a time of 1:03 which was good enough to qualify for the conference meet.
Shyann Miller also took part in the 400 meter hurdles as she crossed the finish line with a time of 1:19.
Up Next: The Rams will be back in action at USC next weekend as they take part in the USC Open.
