Rams Fall on the Road to Camels
For the third day in a row the Columbia International University women's basketball team was on the court. The Rams took on another NCAA Division I school in Campbell University. The Camels had their best season last year and are playing great basketball this year as well, so it was going to be a tough task for the Rams. The game tipped off at 11:45 a.m. as the Camels hosted local elementary schools for an education day. The Rams gave it all they had for the third consecutive day, but the Camels proved to be to much as they won 78-39.
The Camels would get on the board first as they hit a three just forty-three seconds into the game. Those three points were just the start of an 8-0 run that the Camels opened the game with.
Zeleria Simpson scored the Rams first two points as she was able to hit a jumper in the corner. The Camels would use a stingy defense and long offensive possessions to build a double figure lead at the end of the first quarter. After ten minutes the Camels took a 17-4 lead.
Over the first one and a half minutes of the second quarter neither team could get on the board, but the Camels would score first thanks to another three. Just about a minute after the Camels first points of the quarter the Rams would get their first points as well. Zeleria Simpson was able to find a wide open Sam Wammock for the layup. However, the Camels would once again go on a scoring run and limit the Rams.
Victoria Dickerson and
Raven Fleming would each score for the Rams, but the team went into the half down, 30-10.
The Rams came out of the half looking good and stuck with the Camels. Wammock opened up the scoring once again for the Rams, but Dickerson and Fleming would get their points in as well. Even though the Rams shots were finally falling it seemed like everything was going the Camels way. The Camels would go on little spurts to build to their lead and the Rams would fight back, but the lead that was already built was just to much for the Rams to overcome. At the end of the third quarter the Rams were behind, 53-23.
Just like before the Camels would open up the fourth with a three, but on the Rams next possession Fleming was able to match that. However, the Camels would score the games next six points. In a forty-five second span
Raven Fleming scored four points for the Rams, but throughout the rest of the quarter the Camels would continue to build their lead. At the end of the game the Camels would win by the final score of 78-39.
Columbia International shot 27.3% (15-55) from the floor, but just 4-of-22 in the first half...Campbell shot 41.7% (35-84) from the field, including 22-of-38 in the second half...
Raven Fleming led the Rams as she had 19 points and eight rebounds...
Victoria Dickerson added eight points and three rebounds, while Zeleria Simpson had six points, four assists, and four rebounds...Summer Price had a team-high of 21 points for the Camels, while Taya Bolden had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Columbia International will finally have a day off tomorrow before they travel right down the road to take on Columbia College on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday on the campus of Columbia College.
